ChocoboMonkey's Art
Section 1:
Basic Drawing
Hi, and welcome to my tutorial. This is the first of what will hopefully be a whole line of tutorials. These tutorials are created with the absolute beginner in mind, so don't be surprised if it looks like I'm talking to a three year old. I don't mean to degrade your status. I'm sure you’re all very intelligent human beings, but some people who are looking up this tutorial may be that stupid.
So to begin the tutorial, we will start with some basic hand drawing techniques.
First of all, I suggest you print this out, mostly for convenience. If your computer desk is as cluttered up as mine you'll know why. Second of all, for this section of the tutorial, you will need some basic materials.
1 number 2 pencil with an eraser
1 box of colored pencils
some paper
The reason we are using colored pencils is because of their ease of use. They also blend together nicely.
Note: This tutorial will not go into depth in drawing. It is simply a way to get you started to learn how to teach yourself how to draw if you already don't.
Start out by doing your best to draw a BLACK AND WHITE copy of this without tracing...
Does it look much like the original? If it actually looks like what it's supposed to, a picture of the almighty creator Vecna, then you really can't benefit from this part of the tutorial, and you can go ahead and skip to the coloring section. However, if it looks like a killer Teletubbie on acid, then you seriously need help and should read on.
If your reading this, then your picture of Vecna was really scary and you want to know how to make it actually look like him so he doesn't hunt you down and break your legs. Well you've come to the right place my friend. Now try and draw him again, only this time, don't look at the paper your drawing on. Just look at the magnificent picture of Vecna and, without lifting the pencil off the paper, draw an outline of him. Don't worry if it doesn't look right the first time. Just try about 3 times and that's all you'll need.
Now right about now you’re thinking "Great, now so far I've drawn a killer teletubbie on acid, and about 4 liney blob things." And what I have to tell you is "You’re doing great."
The point of all that seemingly pointless junk was to teach you how to train you hand to do what you want it to do. Your one step closer to being able to draw an excellent picture of god er... I mean... Vecna.
Now we'll try something better. Draw a grid over Vecna with squares that are one inch squared. Now draw another grid on a blank piece of paper with two inch squares. It should have the same amount of squares as the original picture of Vecna has. Now draw another picture of vecna. Use the picture as a guide on the blank piece of paper. Just focus on one square at a time. This should be much easier.
How does it look now? Much better huh! Just do that a couple more times and you should be able to draw him freehand!
OK! Great! Now you have one killer teletubbie on acid, four scary liney blob things, and three pictures of Vecna with a grid over him. "What! Three pictures that actually look like Vecna! How did I do that!" You probably just asked. The answer is simple. You just created a foundation for what you still have to learn. You now know the basics for learning how to draw. And with more practice, You can probably do things for yourself.
OK! Now that you can draw. You need to know how to color stuff in. This is basically the exact same thing that you did in kinder garden, only now we call it shading and the shapes are a lot more intricate. I don't really need to take up three pages to tell you how to color, just do what you did in kinder garden, with one exception. Fading. The horrible truth that you need to be able to create a gradient effect in order for it to look nice.
It's really simple really. Just push harder to make darker colors and push lighter to make lighter colors. Now create a quick drawing of Vecna again. You should know how by now. Now color it in. But here’s the catch. The only colors you can use are a regular brown. Some kind of a fleshy color, regular gray, and regular blue. I know there are a lot more different shades of those colors, and you probably have some set that has a million colors or something. But that’s not the point. You have to create Those colors using different pressures.
Now that was pretty easy. You now have a picture of Vecna, in color, hand drawn by you. Now go show it to your mommy and stick it to the refrigerator. Don't think you’re a master artist yet. You still need a lot of practice or you won't be able to draw anything but portraits of Vecna. I suggest buying a sketch book so you can draw everything you see and get a lot of practice.
My next tutorial will be on basic tileset creation. I'll hopefully get it out by the end of next week.
