Aliens: Thanatos Encounter
Aliens: Thanatos Encounter is a top-down action game released in 2001 for the Game Boy Color. The action takes place aboard a spaceship named Thanatos that has been infested with aliens. Players can assume the role of numerous colonial marines (each with their own unique weaponry) as they work to clear each stage of aliens. If the player's life is depleted, that marine is "captured" and must be rescued from an alien nest hidden in the stage. Extra weapons and health boosts can be picked up during gameplay, and power loaders (as seen in the film Aliens) can also be used against the alien threat. Additionally, players must rescue ship crewmembers, some of whom are infected with alien chestbursters and will 'burst' upon rescue, ambushing the player's marine.
In this third-person overhead perspective game, the player chooses to be one of five marines who are onboard a ship headed home that responds to a distress call from a large freighter called the Thanatos. You face Facehuggers, Chestbursters, Drones, Soldiers, and Alien incarnations spawned from the bugs infecting the animal cargo as you battle your way through 12 infested levels. The marines that the player can choose from each have their own strengths and weaknesses. In the player's arsenal there are at least 12 different weapons which include Pulse Rifles, Flamethrowers, Shotguns, and Grenade Launchers. In addition, the player can equip a Marine's left and right hands with different weapons or items. Aboard the doomed ship, the player can collect new weapons, items, and power-ups plus use vehicles and machinery like the APC and Powerloader. There is a plot behind this massacre too, which must be uncovered through the game's cinematic cut scenes.
