Alien³ Gameboy
The Game Boy version of Alien 3 differs greatly from the console games with the same title. This action/adventure is played from a top-down perspective, unlike the side-scrolling action of other versions.
Your mission is to move around the maze-like rooms of the prison complex to collect items you need to stop the alien. Along the way you will rescue prisoners and view cut scenes based on situations in the movie.
Alien 3 for the gameboy is an action/adventure title, with the main point being to kill the aliens(yes, I said that in plural!). Rather than sticking with the movie storyline and making more of an interactive story, Acclaim and LJN decided to make an action/adventure title instead, and good thing they did. It has a few flaws, but they can be overlooked easily enough by the average gamer. I could go on and on about the game, but here's the review, on a scale of one to ten:
Graphics - 7
The graphics are somewhat above average for the original gameboy. Although not very detailed, there is enough visual goodness to merit this rating.
Story - 6
A3 did NOT stick to the movie, but it at least does an average job of explaining why there are numerous aliens to deal with. If it had been closer to the movie, it would have gotten an 8.
Controls - 10
Controls are VERY good, which is not very often in my experiences with original game boy games. Very responsive, with no lag between actions.
Sound - 5
Average sounds for an original game boy title. Nothing special to mention. Could be better, but could have also been worse.
Gameplay - 7
The game is fun, but does have it moments, like in the vent shafts. Once you get caught by a fan, only luck will prevent you from being sucked in and killed. other than making the Queen Alien super strong(a single touch kills you), the only other flaw I can think of is a lack of a save feature, making you have to play the game in a single sitting. Aside from that, there are no other flaws. However, these three are enough to bring the rating down 3 points.
Replayability - 5
Average, as the only real challenge is to complete the game with a higher number of prisoners still alive.
Overall score - 7
Alien 3 is overall a generally fun game which can be enjoyed if you can overlook the three flaws I mentioned above in gameplay.
